Vinyl vs. Aluminum Replacement Windows: Technical Comparison

The comparison that matters in California

Orange County's existing windows are mostly single-pane aluminum, and the replacement decision is usually vinyl versus aluminum. The honest answer depends on whether the aluminum in question is thermally broken.

Thermal performance

Aluminum conducts heat roughly 1,000 times better than vinyl. A non-thermally-broken aluminum frame is a continuous thermal bridge from outside to inside; it condenses readily and cannot reach the Title 24 prescriptive U-factor 0.30 limit in typical residential configurations. A thermally broken aluminum frame inserts a polyurethane or polyamide barrier between the interior and exterior extrusions and can meet code.

Where each is the right answer

Vinyl is the default for standard residential openings in Orange County: it meets code easily, costs less, needs no finish maintenance, and has no corrosion path in coastal air. Its weaknesses are wider frames (less glass), limited color options with dark-color heat concerns, and lower stiffness on very large units.

Thermally broken aluminum is the right answer when the design requires narrow sightlines, very large sliding or multi-slide openings, or structural spans vinyl cannot carry — contemporary architecture, moving glass walls, and large fixed picture units. Expect a meaningfully higher price and a finish specification discussion.

Non-thermally-broken aluminum remains available for some non-conditioned applications but should not be specified for conditioned living space in current California work.

Coastal note

In Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Seal Beach, Dana Point and San Clemente, aluminum frame and hardware finish class is a real durability variable. Ask which AAMA finish class (2603, 2604 or 2605) the coating meets; 2605 is the most durable of the three.
