What to check in the official record
License identity
Match the license number, business name and entity to the party named on the proposal and contract.
Active status
Confirm the official record says the license is current and active, not expired, suspended or canceled.
Classification
Review the classifications listed and whether they cover the work being offered.
Bond
Read the current contractor-bond information and note any suspension or cancellation shown in the official record.
Workers’ compensation
Review the workers’ compensation section and any stated exemption; do not assume coverage from a verbal statement.
Personnel and disclosure
Review the listed personnel and any complaint or enforcement disclosure that CSLB makes public.
Use the same identity across every document
The business name and license number on the proposal, contract, permit application and CSLB record should be reconciled. If a salesperson is involved, the official CSLB lookup also provides a Home Improvement Salesperson registration search.
