Egress consequences
A sleeping room requires an operable emergency escape and rescue opening. Fixed units provide zero egress area, and sliders and hungs provide roughly half the rough opening. Converting a bedroom slider to a fixed picture window, or shrinking it with a retrofit insert, can put the room out of compliance with California Residential Code R310.
Air leakage
Compression-seal windows — casement and awning — seal tighter than sliding-seal windows because closing the sash compresses the gasket. Where acoustic performance or draft control matters, operation type matters as much as the glass.
Practical selection in Orange County
Most retrofit projects replace sliders with sliders because the opening geometry and HOA-approved appearance already assume it. Upgrading to casements at specific openings — a bedroom that needs egress area, a bathroom that needs ventilation, a street-facing room that needs acoustic control — is often the higher-value choice than upgrading glass across the whole house.
